Full Description

An archaeological evaluation took place at Hillborough Caravan Park in 2000 with further excavations in 2001. Out of the 50 evaluation 5 contained archaeological features and finds. A number of linear features were excavated in trenches 1 2 and 3. These features appear to be sections of North to South and North-East to South-West aligned ditches. Finds from these features included flints dated to the period of the later Bronze Age and Late Iron Age pottery. Additionally at the eastern end of Trench 1 an assemblage of flint blades and flakes from the early part of the Bronze Age were found. (1)

The area was investigated further in 2001. An additional pit was excavated containg 18 sherds of Bronze Age pottery. The ditches are believed to be remains of boundary ditches. Although the main activity is believed to be Bronze Age a number of Mesolithic struck flints were also excavated. (2)

In trenches 18 and 19 several large but amorphus features were exposed. No dating evidence or finds were recovered. However there are similar features at a site at Eddington that have been dated to the Bronze Age providing a possible date.(1) These features were further exposed in 2001 with no datable finds produced other than a single sherd of very abraded Roman pottery. The feature is believed to be natural. (2)

A series of stakeholes containing late medieval and post-medieval tile were also excavated, this is possibly the remains of a fence line or boundary. (1)
