Full Description
In 2013 a geophysical survey which consisted of a magnetometer and earth resistivity survey was carried out. A number of ditches were found. These are mainly believed to be field boundary ditches. A roughly circular area of approximately 12m diameter might mark the site of a structure, e.g. a spread of debris. A building demolished in the 20th century is thought to have stood in this area and there is a spread of blackearth and debris nearby. A pit like structure was also observed.
It is difficult to comment upon much of the area, however, the western field does show signs of former land divisions as well as possible small-scale quarrying of sand or other materials. Overlaid upon the geological variations apparent in the electrical resistance data are a number of linear anomalies, that are likely to be former land divisions within the cluster of buildings depicted on the 1639 manorial plan. Two possible narrow ditch fills, perhaps drains, are evident and might hint at a wider network of drainage of this low-laying area. (1)
