Full Description

Archaeological excavations in the form of a georesisitivity survey, fingertip searches and eventual keyhole excavation took place at Nos 7, 8 and 9 Stephens Close in November 2010 (?). They were in an attempt to discover the continuation below ground of an intact medieval wall on the surface in the garden of No 9.

A flint structure, topped by what was probably a context from Davington Court's Kitchen garden, was uncovered in the garden of No 8 along with shells, shell fragments and animal bone. This feature was thought to be a wall foundation.

The base of the standing medieval wall was exposed revealing possible 17-18th Century repair and modern artefactual evidence in the contexts abutting the wall, presumably relating to a modern garden surface or driveway.

A keyhole excavated South of the standing wall uncovered a wall made up of flint, stone and a finer line of mortar than that used for the wall foundation (above). It was unclear whether this was a continuation of the extant wall and the wall foundation as it had a different composition and different dimensions.

A trench with rubble and a clay pipe bowl was also excavated though artefactual material was sparse and no features wee uncovered.

The final trench revealed no wall continuation and its fill contained two residual mesolithic blades and some pot boilers. A pit was present in this trench but contained no artefactual material.
