Full Description

Excavations took place at Tayne Field, Lyminge in 2013 as part of the Lyminge Archaeological Project, an ongoing series of excavations. They uncovered several sunken featured buildings, ditches and pits dating from the Anglo-Saxon to Medieval Periods.

The first phase of activity uncovered at the site was two sunken featured buildings both dated to the Anglo-Saxon period (Late 6th Century). Associated with these were some Anglo-Saxon pits.

The second phase of activity at the site was 4 major timber buildings alongside a range of associated structural features such as fenced enclosures and subsidiary buildings. Part of the second phase was also the Eastern Hall Complex which itself had seen three phases of construction.

There was also evidence of further post-in-hole building in the Western extension which was interpreted as possible evidence of another Western Hall complex.

There was evidence for 'opus signinum' flooring in the second phase.

Unusual fill features were associated with all phases of building. (See Report SKE31291 for further detail).

Saxon Norman and Medieval ditches were also uncovered suggesting use of the site after the Norman Conquest.
