Summary

During the excavation of a soakaway a V-shaped ditch was uncovered. The ditch contained a number of finds from 1st to 3rd Century mixed together. The finds from within the ditch included Roman pottery sherds, as well as Roman building materials (for example tile and glass fragments). These finds were dated to between the 1st and 3rd Century AD. Other finds included a piece of sarsen stone, perhaps used to sharpen metal knives as a honing stone, an undated suspected bone sewing needle, a hob nail from a Roman shoe and a number oyster shells.

Full Description

A collection of artefacts was recovered from Groom Way, Lenham (c.2014-15). Information on the exact location, and nature of the finds was not provided in the report.

Roman Pottery sherds were found in a possible Roman ditch at Groom Way, Lenham. Finds include C1-C2 Samian ware pot sherds, Roman roof tile and mortar fragments, a fragment of Roman window glass, and a collection of 1st to 3rd Century sandy ware and grog ware sherds. The other finds included: a piece of sarsen stone, shaped and worn as if used to sharpen metal knives as a honing stone. It also had an iron encrusted slot, perhaps for attatchment to an iron rod; an undated suspected bone sewing needle, a hob nail from a Roman shoe and a 'large' number of oyster shells (photographs of 7 are included in the report).
No exact location was provided for the finds within the report.

The author references the possibility of a Roman bath house close to the site but no further information was available. (1)

A document detailing the excavation of a soakaway on a site adjacent to Groom Way (2014) appears to be associated with the finds report. During the excavation of a soakaway a V-shaped ditch was uncovered. The ditch contained a number of finds from 1st to 3rd Century mixed together.
