Full Description
Following a planning application for a Solar Farm at the site an archaeological evaluation was carried out between 6th-21st August 2015. During the evaluation trenching two probable, and one possible, cremation burial pits (and associated vessels and cremated remains) were found in one of the evaluation trenches. A total of 48 trenches were excavated. Archaeological finds or features were identified within 28 of the trenches.
Trench 18 contained two probable, and one possible, cremation burial pits. The remains are thought to be early Roman. One of the burials was dated to 70-130 AD. One of the burials comprised of a vessel containing the cremated remains, placed within an amphora. Another was a group of three vessels, one of which contained the cremated remains, and another of which was attributed a date of 70-130 AD. The final, potential, cremation burial was represented by a cremation pit, dated to 1st-2nd Century. All dates are based on the dating evidence of the pottery itself found alongside each feature. (1)
