Author/Originator
Date/Year 2015

Abstract/Summary

The report details the archaeological evaluation carried out on Land near Manston Road, Manston. The report details the results of the excavation of 48 trenches, and also an impact assessment. From the Report: "An archaeological evaluation was carried out between 6 August 2015 and 21 August 2015 by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust within land situated ..[on] Manston Road, Manston, Thanet, Kent (centred NGR 634359 166074)... The evaluation was carried out to investigate the potential impact on the archaeological resource by the proposed works. The proposed development is situated within an area of high archaeological potential. Former appraisals and archaeological investigations of the area have identified extensive evidence for human activity dating from the prehistoric period through to the present. The archaeological evaluation comprised excavation of 48 trenches. Underlying geology was observed and recorded in all trenches. Archaeological features were identified in 28 evaluation trenches. Where datable, archaeological features ranged in period from prehistoric to post-medieval. The features represent ditches, gullies, pits, post-holes and burials, the latter of which dated to the early Roman period. Features of prehistoric date form parts of an extensive prehistoric landscape which includes evidence for settlement and monument building. Late Iron Age to early Roman activity at the site probably formed a continuation of adjacent occupation previously identified during archaeological investigations in Manston Airport. Post-Roman activity dated to the early medieval period and the post-medieval period was also represented."
