Full Description
Between August and September 2015 an archaeological evaluation excavated a total of 17 trenches.
Five of the trenches revealed 11 diagnostic fragments of clay popes. These included 7 partial or complete bowls. When paralleled to London typology they were classed as Type 21 (c.1680-1710), Type 25 (c.1700-1770), and Type 28 (c.1820-1840). In addition, two stems with spurs probably belonging to Type 25 bowls. One long forward pointing spur belongs to Type 26 (c.1740-1800).
Several trenches also revealed post-medieval pottery sherds (15 in total originating from 7 trenches). These largely consisted of both glazed and unglazed Redwares. Amongst these are 4 sherds (three adjoining from a rim jug and strap handle, the other a body sherd) that are comparable to products of the kiln at Hareplain, Biddenden (approximately 5km NW) dated to c.1500. There is also one sherd of Border ware dated as late 16th early 17th Century (from the handle of a tripod pipkin). The remaining redwares were only broadly dated (no further information available within source). There was also a sherd from a German stoneware bottle, probably Frechen, and probably 17th century found at the site. (1)
NOTE: The findspot has been placed approximately in the centre of the densest area of finds. The majority of finds listed were uncovered within a 75m radius. As little information is available regarding any of the finds, they have not been given individual records.
