Full Description
During an archaeological desk-based assessment in June 2015 the remains of Bone Mill were located. The remains lie approximately 290m to the south east of the most southerly site boundary at Tanyard farm. The stream that continues past the site boundary continues to the remains of the Bone Mill before changing its course to a south-westerly direction. Bone Mill was a water mill used to grind bones to be used as fertiliser. The exact extent of the remains has not been established due to prolific foliage and undergrowth obscuring much of the area.
Four sections of thick red brick wall could be seen upon the site visit (June 2015). Historic maps show how the building developed. On the 1st edition Ordnance Survey Map it is shown as a rectangular structure. In the 1841 Tithe map the building is an L shape, with the Mill pond located to the north of the building. Bone Mill was disused by 1908, the stream and mill pond on this map are shown to contain reeds (suggesting it was no longer maintained. Falling into disrepair, the mill pond was infilled as shown on a 1946 aerial photo. The site visit failed to find evidence of the mill pond itself. (1)
The exact shape and location of the remains of the mill have been estimated based on the 1946 aerial photograph and the source map.
