Full Description

Pottery sherds were recovered in pit [005]. These included two rim sherds of fully oxidised pale buff-ornage shell tempered ware which has been dated to approximately 750 to 850 AD. Three struck flints were also found that have been determined as residual. Their presence may confirm some sort of prehistoric activity. An iron object was also found but has not been identified and when this report was published it was due to be x-rayed. (1)

From the report "Pottery - Two conjoining rim sherds and one body sherd of fully oxidised pale buff-orange shell-tempered ware. All share the same wear-pattern - heavy unifacial wear, near-fresh on one side - so may have lain in Context 003 for some time before final seal (or went through same process of weathering before arriving in Context 3). Shell component totally leached out leaving typically flat shallow flat-floored cavities or thin linear voids in the fabric structure. One rim has a pink tinged 'splash'-zone within an aureole of soot stain with a whitish deposit over both the rim interior and the sherd break. The bodysherd has a similar whitish deposit on one side. The pink-tingeing and white deposit are typical features associated with saltproduction - in this case the sherds/vessel have been directly used in the boiling of brine for salt or have been splashed by the process itself. The oxidised nature of the sherds would support the former."
