Full Description

In 2012 Wessex archaeology carried out an archaeological watching brief on land at Coldharbour Road, Gravesend, between the 18th and 22nd of June 2012. This followed a desk based assessment from 2007. The watching brief monitored the excavation of an area measuring 5.5 sq m down to the level of the archaeological horizon. The excavation area did not cover the entire site, as part of the site was not to be subjected to ground work and therefore would not damage potential archaeological deposits. A shallow circular posthole with a concave profile measuring 0.48m in diameter and 0.13m deep was uncovered during the watching brief. The posthole contained a single deliberate backfill containing abundant charcoal and occasional fragments of fired clay. The posthole is estimated to be contemporary to the archaeological horizon on the rest of the site, estimated at perhaps Neolithic/Bronze Age in date. (1)
