Monument record TQ 75 SE 388 - Undated Ditch containing Iron Axe/Hatchet Head, Heath Road

Summary

During an archaeological evaluation undertaken in October 2015 a total of 18 evaluation trenches were excavated, 5 were found to contain archaeology. An undated E-W aligned ditch, moderately steep with a concave base, was uncovered in Trench 5. Interpreted as a boundary ditch, the fill of the ditch contained a single bit iron axe or hatchet head. It appears to be unsocketed, indicating the use of a split wood haft.
