Abstract/Summary

This report summarises the Archaeological Evaluation conducted by Wessex Archaeology at the site between 13th and 21st October 2015. Taken from the report: "Summary: Wessex Archaeology was commissioned … to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land north of Heath Road, Coxheath, Maidstone, Kent…Eighteen 50m x 1.8m trenches were excavated which revealed probable field/drainage boundary ditches, pits and a colluvial spread through the centre of the Site on a north south alignment. Five linear ditches located within the eastern and western extent of the Site are likely to be related to land division and agricultural use. In addition to linear features four pits were present within the trenches; one is a modern cut filled with a deliberate backfill of burnt material and demolition debris, one was substantial but barren, sealed by natural colluvial deposits and the remaining two showed evidence of in-situ burning. Dating evidence was limited to late post-medieval/early modern ceramic sherds and clay pipe stems. The archaeological evaluation was undertaken between the 13th October 2015 and 21st October 2015."
