Full Description
During an archaeological evaluation at West Malling Abbey in September-October 2015, five small archaeological test pits were excavated. Found in a single test pit (Test Pit 2) was a collection of medieval and post medieval pottery sherds. The earliest material (also the earliest material revealed during the excavation) was early medieval shell tempered ware (c.1125-1200), Sand and Shell tempered ware (c.1100-1200), and coarse sand tempered ware with incised decoration (post 1150). There was also a London type ware bodysherd, dating from 1150-1350. Also recovered was a fine sandy baluster jug base in a fine red fabric typically dated to 1125-1250 and is likely dating to the later end of the date range. The latest material found was sprigged applied decorated ware dated to the 18th-19th Century. Brick and tile fragments were also present (estimated as 18th Century or earlier). It is noted that the sherds should be considered unstratified. (1)
