Full Description

During an archaeological evaluation at West Malling Abbey in September-October 2015, five small archaeological test pits were excavated. Four of the pits revealed pottery sherds. A small number of Medieval and Post Medieval pottery sherds were recovered from Test Pit 3. The oldest material was a grey ware handle with slashed decoration - probably a North Kent Greyware - dated from c.1125-1400. Later sherds include early post medieval metallic glazed ware (c.1480-1600); a Tudor Green ware / Border green ware porringer (handled bowl) rim sherd (17th Century); two sherds of tin-glazed ware with blue painted decoration on the interior and probably tin glaze on the exterior (17th Century); and a Staffordshire white salt glazed ware decorated bowl sherd (18th Century).
