Full Description
Between 1st and 3rd February 2016 an archaeological evaluation was carried out involving the excavation of 5 trenches. Archaeological features were uncovered within four of the trenches. A large pit, possibly a quarry was uncovered in Trench 3. Dimensions of the quarry pit exceeded the dimensions of the trench and were specified at >16m in length, > 2m in length, <1.2m in depth. The fill of the pit produced a significant quantity of Early Iron Age or Middle Iron Age pottery sherds, undiagnostic worked flints, and fire cracked flint. The exact function of the pit is unclear; it is suggested to be a possible quarry or a waterhole.
NOTE: the extent of the pit is not clearly represented in the source document. The single line corresponds to the cut of the pit represented in the plan of trench three from the source document. (1)
