Full Description
During archaeological evaluation trenching at St Mildred's Church in March 2015 two intercutting ditches were uncovered alongside 2 other undated ditches, and a possible ditch. The intercutting ditches were dated by a single, fresh, body sherd of prehistoric pottery. A residual flint blade fragment (2g) was also recovered. The age rage for the blade is estimated as Mesolithic to Neolithic, more specifically c.7750-3200 BC. The body sherd pottery fragment, a small fairly fresh piece, is made of plain flint tempered coarseware (1.5g). The piece is not diagnostic and similar materials are present in most prehistoric periods. The general date range is between 4000-50 BC. Elements of a Bronze Age field system have been found to the north west of this site, at Minster Primary School. It is possible that these ditches may have formed part of the same system. (1)
