In March 2015 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation of land adjacent to St Mildred’s Church, Minster. The evaluation took the form of two trenches, each measuring 10m in length and 1.8m in width, located within the footprint of the proposed two new detached residential dwellings. The site is presently a partially cleared, disused garden and allotment area divided into two sections by a garden wall that separates the area to the rear of St Mildred’s Church from the northern part of the site. The evaluation revealed four, or possibly five, archaeological features, including a number of ditches or gullies, and a single sherd of prehistoric pottery. Elements of a Bronze Age field system were identified to the north west of the Minster Primary School. The lack of cultural material indicates the site was likely part of a field system or agricultural plots of prehistoric date, and that the site was outside any focus of significant settlement activity. The evaluation concluded that the excavation of the footings for the proposed buildings will have a significant impact on archaeological features not encountered by the trenching.
