Full Description
The excavation of 16 test pits, in order establish ground conditions on the site, were monitored between the 14th and 19th of August 2008. These investigations were undertaken in advance of the proposed development of the site.
Archaeological deposits were recorded in two test pits on the site. Other test pits contained cultural material in topsoil deposits in the form of ceramic building material and a single sherd of medieval pottery. In Test Pit 13, a compacted layer of flints, the limit of which is unclear, was uncovered. This could form part of a linear trackway feature, as it broadly approximates to the location of a linear feature identified in an aerial photograph from 2007. Other interpretations suggest perhaps the flints form part of a courtyard, or were simply dumped. (1)
