Monument record TQ 94 NW 286 - Medieval Field System, Charing Quarry (phase 1)

Summary

During February and March 2014 an archaeological excavation was carried out at the site of the expansion of Charing Quarry. Four gullies were recorded, two of these joined with previously uncovered Medieval gullies from the adjacent field. The gullies form part of multiphase Medieval activity of the site. Perhaps these represent a drove- or track- way.

Full Description

During February and March 2014 an archaeological excavation was carried out at the site of the expansion of Charing Quarry. Four gullies were recorded, two of these joined with previously uncovered Medieval gullies from the adjacent field. No dateable material was recovered from any of these features; however the similarities with the Medieval field system from the adjacent excavation area, as well as the fact that D10 and D12 were continuations of two of the gullies from this field system support the assumption that they are Medieval in date. The gullies were orientated north-west to south-east. Based on strategraphic evidence, these gullies form part of multiphase Medieval activity of the site. (1)
