Full Description
In 2008 a series of evaluation trenches took place across the PB site prior to development. Evidence of an Early Roman Earthen bank was uncovered in Trench 2 and possibly in Trench 5. The bank was formed of a series of orange sandy clay and black organic banded deposits.
It has been hypothesised that this bank could represent a pre-wall bank to the Roman city wall.
Taken from Source PB Site, Horsewash Lane, Rochester:
"Sequentially the next earliest feature identified on the site was an early oman earthen bank. This feature was recorded in trench 2 as 2/010 and possibly in trench 5. This bank was comprised of a series of orange sandy clay and black organic banded deposits and was recorded to a height of
3.40m OD and was over 1.0m thick and can be conjectured to extend between trenches 2/10 and 5. This feature contained pottery dated to AD70-150." (2)
