Full Description
In 2008 evaluation trenches were carried out across the PB Site, Horsewash Lane, Rochester. In trenches 2/10, 3 and 5 remains of a possible Roman masonry city wall and a large masonry structure which has been interpreted as a bastion or possibly a gatehouse were uncovered.
The source from Archaeology South East states that the "wall was recorded in trenches 3 and 5. In trench 5 the wall was constructed from irregular ragstone blocks bonded with an offwhite slightly yellow mortar. Up to 0.90m of this wall face was exposed in the eastern end of the trench between 3.53m OD and 4.43m OD. This wall was backed by a dump of mixed orange sandy clay at least 0.60m deep. This dump was similar to the one recorded in trench 2/10 which overlay the earth bank (10/002)."
"In trench 3 the remaining city wall comprised ragstone blocks bonded with a yellowish orange sandy mortar. The observed dimensions of this wall were 0.35m east west and 1.90m north south and was 0.40m high. The top of this wall was at 2.67m OD. Features of this wall were also uncovered in the 1960's by Aurthur Harrison." (3)
