Full Description
In 2008 trail trenching was conducted across the PB Site, Horsewash Lane, Rochester. A total of 10 trenches were evaluated in total prior to development.
Roman surfaces were recorded in trenches 2/10 and 3.
The report states that "Roman surfaces were identified in trench 2/10 at a depth of 2.55m OD to
the southwest of the later earth bank. These surfaces appear to be representative of a series of repairs to an unidentified original surface and comprised crushed mortar, chalk and flint cobbles and chalk and flint fragments. Pottery contained within one of these surfaces was dated to AD160-200. These surfaces were bounded to the northeast by a wall. Their relationship to this wall and its date is unclear but it may represent a Roman building cut into the interior face of the earth rampart. This wall comprised
irregular chalk ragstone, and tile fragments bonded with a yellowish orange sandy mortar and measured 5.90 in length by 0.34m wide." (5)
