Full Description

In 2008 evaluation trenches were established across the PB site prior to development. The corner of a potentially medieval building was recorded in trench 6. The wall was L-Shaped in form, constructed of chalk blocked and bonded in a yellow/orange sandy mortar, the surviving top course observed was form from irregular flint nodules.

The report from South East Archaeology States that:

"Archaeologically there appears to have been a hiatus of activity within the bounds of the city walls during the medieval period. The only evidence for this period comes from trenches 3 and 6. Evidence from trench 3 suggests the rebuilding/repair of the Roman city wall but not of the masonry structure.
The corner of a potentially medieval building was recorded in trench 6. This wall was L-shaped in form and measured 1.70m east-west and 1.70m north-south and was 0.60m wide and was over 1.0m high. The top of this wall was survived to 3.99m OD. The wall was constructed of chalk blocks bonded in a yellow/orange sandy mortar. The top course observed was formed from irregular flint nodules.
This perceived hiatus may be due to a number of factor including abandonment of this area of the city, site clearance (medieval tile and shoes were identified in the ditches in trenches 7 and 8) and truncation. The medieval features associated with the city wall should be regarded as being
of local significance." (7)
