Full Description

in 2008 evalaution trenching was conducted across the PB site in advance of possible development. A series of possible post medieval deposits were uncovered in Trench 7. The trench contained a possible fragmentary metalled surface at its western end and a timber revetment at its eastern end.

In regards to the western end of the trench the report states that:
"This trench measured 14.4 by 2.00m. The earliest deposit recorded in the trench was 7/01. This deposit consisted of mid greyish brown sandy silt with frequent flint pebbles and chalk fragments with occasional fragments of medieval peg and roof tiles. This deposit was identified at 2.59m OD toward
the western extremity of the trench and was 0.70m wide. It is probable that this deposit represents a fragmentary metalled surface. Overlying this was 7/02 a dark brown clayey silt, 0.20m thick containing 16th and 17th century CBM. This in turn was overlain by 7/03 an orangey brown silty clay 0.44m
thick containing 16th to 18th CBM. Overlying this was 7/07 which comprised a blue grey clayey silt. This deposit was 0.36m thick and contained early post-medieval tile. These deposits were truncated to the west by cut 7/04."

In the Eastern side of the trench the report states that:
"Deposit 7/06 was identified to the eastern end of the trench and comprised a mid blue grey clay with moderate chalk flecks, flint pebbles and CBM fragments which have been dated to the early post-medieval period. The top of this deposit was recorded at 2.99m OD. This deposit was cut to the west
by 7/04 and to the east by cut 7/017. Cut 7/017 aligned north-south; toward the eastern extent of the trench it was 0.16 wide and of unknown depth. It would appear that this was the cut for timber revetment 7/019 and was filled by 7/18, which contained 17th and 18th century tile and clay tobacco pipe." (8)
