In February and March 2008 Foundations Archaeology undertook a programme of archaeological evaluation on land centred on Russell Street, Dover, Kent (NGR: TR 3211 4135). The project was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd. on behalf of Bond City.

Trench 4 was located to the west of Trench 3 and contained a relatively low amount of modern disturbance. A highly complex sequence of well-preserved features and deposits were present, which comprised stone, chalk and brick built walls and floor surfaces, earth-cut features and soil deposits. It is probable that the archaeological features and deposits in Trench 4 represent a continuation of activity identified in the previous Townwall excavations, immediately to the south. The consistent northeast-southwest/northwest-southeast alignment of the walls and structures in Trench 4 is probably reflective of the position of St. James Street, immediately to the north.

A linear deposit of grey stones (0.22mX0.15m), aligned northeast/southwest possibly represents a wall/kerb located towards the northern end of the trench with two associated fills. Both the stones and the fills were sealed beneath deposit containing late Medieval/ early post medieval pottery. (1)
