Full Description
In February and March 2008 Foundations Archaeology undertook a programme of archaeological evaluation on land centred on Russell Street, Dover, Kent (NGR: TR 3211 4135). The project was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd. on behalf of Bond City.
Trench 9: was 28.4m long by up to 2.4m wide and was located in the area of a large, extant crater, which had previously removed deposits to a depth of up to 2.3m (3.13m OD) below modern ground surface. This enabled access to deposits and features at depths not possible in the other trenches. The trench contained a number of potentially archaeologically significant deposits and features.
Waterlogged conditions were present in trench 9 which resulted in the preservation of a single wooden post which had been had been rammed into the top of a layer which sealed Medieval contexts. It was, however not possible to date this feature more precisely than Medieval or later.(1)
