Summary

Anglo-Saxon grave goods assemblage found by a metal-detectorist at Upstreet, including a copper alloy hanging bowl, an iron sword and an iron shield boss with fittings. Due to weather conditions on site, only the finder's hole was excavated. However, the assemblage clearly represent a rich Anglo-Saxon grave and the remainder of the feature may survive.

Full Description

From the report:
"A rich Anglo-Saxon grave assemblage was found by a metal detectorist on 1st March 2013 at TR 22200 62850. The assemblage consisted of a copper alloy hanging bowl, an iron sword and an iron shield boss, with a silvered terminal and two associated mounts."

"The objects initially recovered clearly come from a rich Anglo-Saxon grave. The presence of surviving grave fill and the possibility of further objects were confirmed by the excavation. The depth of the grave was determined and it is located well below the modern plough horizon, itself a substantial layer. The soil conditions observed mean that it is unlikely that human remains survive. Consequently, if the grave is to be fully recorded, it will require a substantial excavation trench to cover the full extent and to reach the required depth." (1)
