Full Description

During work undertaken near the Church of St. Martin Le Grand in 1955 which included the excavation of a pit, dug mechanically about 70ft. by 80ft. and averaging 16ft. deep, the original slope of the west bank of the dour estuary was located. The bank slopes steeply towards Market Place which must have been made up in Roman times. On top of the estuary bank was a prehistoric occupation layer (TR 34 SW 1256). This continued to a peaty layer at the base of the slope. (1)
