Full Description
During a watching brief carried out ahead of the redevelopment of an empty plot at 137 Snargate Street, the base of an early pit was located towards the north-west end of the main trench. This was filled with a large quantity of broken wine bottles, with one complete example recovered. The bottles are of late 18th - early 19th century type but the stratigraphic sequence at this point suggests that the pit in which they were discarded may be more recent, implying the mass dumping of a large group of old bottles. There can be no doubt that these were derived from the wine vaults in the adjacent cliffs. (1)
