Full Description

During a watching brief carried out by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 1998, traces of earlier street metalling’s were located directly beneath the modern road level. These consisted of up to four thin layers of rammed chalk, pebbles and pea gravel. These rested upon a thick dump deposit with an overall thickness of between 1.50m and 1.60m. Within the dump, individual layers of rammed chalk rubble up to 0.3m in thickness were interleaved with layers of brick and tile rubble, clearly representing building rubble brought in from other parts of the town. Amongst this debris were fragments of small Dutch bricks indicating that some structures of 17th -18th century date were being pulled down. Other bricks were typical 19th century yellow stock variety. This dump must represent the make-up of the documented causeway. (1-2)
