Full Description
In February and March 2008 Foundations Archaeology undertook a programme of archaeological evaluation on land centred on Russell Street, Dover, Kent (NGR: TR 3211 4135). The project was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd. on behalf of Bond City.
Trench 2 was located in the area of the former Thompson’s Garage and, in spite of the high degree of modern disturbance, it contained evidence for well-preserved archaeological deposits in the form of stone, chalk and brick-built structures, including walls and possible floor surfaces, along with possible earth-cut features and soil deposits.
A chalk surface was located which was not associated with any dating evidence. However, it occurred at the same depth as, and is probably a continuation of another chalk layer which overlaid a flint, chalk and brick-built wall and is therefore unlikely to pre-date the Post-medieval period. (1)
