In February and March 2008 Foundations Archaeology undertook a programme of archaeological evaluation on land centred on Russell Street, Dover, Kent (NGR: TR 3211 4135). The project was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd. on behalf of Bond City.

Trench 4 was located to the west of Trench 3 and contained a relatively low amount of modern disturbance. A highly complex sequence of well preserved features and deposits was present, which comprised stone, chalk and brick built walls and floor surfaces, earth-cut features and soil deposits. It is probable that the archaeological features and deposits in Trench 4 represent a continuation of activity identified in the previous Townwall excavations, immediately to the south. The consistent northeast-southwest/northwest-southeast alignment of the walls and structures in Trench 4 is probably reflective of the position of St. James Street, immediately to the north.

Sub-rectangular, stone-built structure of light grey stones (0.5mX0.41mX0.40m) was located towards the southern end of the trench forming a vertical shaft. Incorporates occasional brick fragments. Bonded by soft, grey grit and charcoal mortar. (1)
