Full Description

In February and March 2008 Foundations Archaeology undertook a programme of archaeological evaluation on land centred on Russell Street, Dover, Kent (NGR: TR 3211 4135). The project was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd. on behalf of Bond City.

Trench 4 was located to the west of Trench 3 and contained a relatively low amount of modern disturbance. A highly complex sequence of well-preserved features and deposits was present, which comprised stone, chalk and brick built walls and floor surfaces, earth-cut features and soil deposits. It is probable that the archaeological features and deposits in Trench 4 represent a continuation of activity identified in the previous Townwall Street excavations, immediately to the south. The consistent northeast-southwest/northwest-southeast alignment of the walls and structures in Trench 4 is probably reflective of the position of St. James Street, immediately to the north.

A wall occurred at the southern end of the trench at a depth of 0.17m below modern ground surface. It was of faced beige stone blocks (0.35mX0.30mX0.07m+), aligned north-northwest/south-southeast bonded by soft chalk mortar. The feature was undated and was not demonstrably a continuation of any structure present within the adjacent Townwall Street excavations. (1)
