In February and March 2008 Foundations Archaeology undertook a programme of archaeological evaluation on land centred on Russell Street, Dover, Kent (NGR: TR 3211 4135). The project was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd. on behalf of Bond City.

Trench 4 was located to the west of Trench 3 and contained a relatively low amount of modern disturbance. A highly complex sequence of well-preserved features and deposits was present, which comprised stone, chalk and brick built walls and floor surfaces, earth-cut features and soil deposits. It is probable that the archaeological features and deposits in Trench 4 represent a continuation of activity identified in the previous Townwall excavations, immediately to the south. The consistent northeast-southwest/northwest-southeast alignment of the walls and structures in Trench 4 is probably reflective of the position of St. James Street, immediately to the north.

A sub-square, brick-built feature; yellow and red bricks (0.23mX0.11mX0.07m) forming vertical shaft was located towards the southern end of the trench. It was up to 2 courses wide, 10 courses in depth and bonded by solid white mortar. It is of possible post medieval date but may be later. (1)
