In February and March 2008 Foundations Archaeology undertook a programme of archaeological evaluation on land centred on Russell Street, Dover, Kent (NGR: TR 3211 4135). The project was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd. on behalf of Bond City.

Trench 4 was located to the west of Trench 3 and contained a relatively low amount of modern disturbance. A highly complex sequence of well-preserved features and deposits was present, which comprised stone, chalk and brick built walls and floor surfaces, earth-cut features and soil deposits. It is probable that the archaeological features and deposits in Trench 4 represent a continuation of activity identified in the previous Townwall Street excavations, immediately to the south. The consistent northeast-southwest/northwest-southeast alignment of the walls and structures in Trench 4 is probably reflective of the position of St. James Street, immediately to the north.

A possible surface of irregular shaped grey/beige stones (0.6mX0.28m) with frequent flecks of charcoal and patches of charcoal staining was located towards the northern end of the trench. It is of possible post medieval date but may be later. (1)
