Full Description
In February and March 2008 Foundations Archaeology undertook a programme of archaeological evaluation on land centred on Russell Street, Dover, Kent (NGR: TR 3211 4135). The project was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd. on behalf of Bond City.
Trench 9: was 28.4m long by up to 2.4m wide and was located in the area of a large, extant crater, which had previously removed deposits to a depth of up to 2.3m (3.13m OD) below modern ground surface. This enabled access to deposits and features at depths not possible in the other trenches. The trench contained a number of potentially archaeologically significant deposits and features.
A brick built structure was located towards the north-eastern end of the trench. It consisted of cherry/orange bricks (0.23mX0.11mX0.07m), bonded by a grey clay/grit mortar, up to 2 courses wide forming the corner of the structure with at least one internal division. It is stratigraphically later than the Medieval features located within this trench but it may represent a post medieval structure. (1)
