Full Description
In February and March 2008 Foundations Archaeology undertook a programme of archaeological evaluation on land centred on Russell Street, Dover, Kent (NGR: TR 3211 4135). The project was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd. on behalf of Bond City.
Trench 9: was 28.4m long by up to 2.4m wide and was located in the area of a large, extant crater, which had previously removed deposits to a depth of up to 2.3m (3.13m OD) below modern ground surface. This enabled access to deposits and features at depths not possible in the other trenches. The trench contained a number of potentially archaeologically significant deposits and features.
A cut feature with a shallow sloping profile located towards the south-western end of the trench contained the north eastern part of a sub square brick built structure consisting of orange frogged bricks (0.23mX0.11mX0.07m), bonded by grey cement. It is stratigraphically later than the Medieval features located within this trench but it may represent a later post medieval or early modern structure. (1)
