Full Description
"A small number of features were recorded in trench 2, in addition to a large pit recorded in trench 1, all of which probably date to around the time of the Second World War."
"Situated central to the trench, and cutting all these deposits, was a large circular feature [105]. This feature was not fully observed in plan but measured 2.9m in diameter. The uppermost fill (104) of the feature comprised dark grey-brown topsoil mixed with frequent lumps of chalk, which contained large iron structural fittings and fragments of red frogged brick."
In trench 2 "situated just to the north of the ditch, a rectangular feature [208] was partially exposed. With a maximum visible length of 0.6m and a width of 0.7m, the feature had vertical sides and a flat base and was filled with a single deposit comprising 90% chalk lumps mixed with 10% loose pale grey silty-clay (207). Fragments of bitumen were recovered from the base of the cut.
Two further features, both probably post-holes, were situated towards each end of the trench. At the south, post-hole [203] was rectangular measuring 0.55m x 0.3m and 0.3m deep. The post-hole had vertical sides and a sloping base and was filled with a single deposit of loose pale grey silty-clay (202) with abundant chalk lumps and one fragment of modern peg-tile (not retained). To the north, a similar feature [210] was only partially exposed. Filled with a similar deposit (209), the maximum visible measurements were 0.2m x 0.2m and 0.2m deep. One fragment of modern window glass was retrieved from this feature (not retained)."
"At the west end of the area, were three possible post-holes [311], [312] and [313], all of which were similar to post-holes [203] and [210]." (1)
