Full Description
From the report: "The building is a large rectangular structure about 60 feet long by 20 feet wide with entrances at both ends built of yellow brick in English bond on a stone and flint base with a pantiled roof sweeping down over very low side walls. The south-west end to Strand Street has a painted brick screen wall with a ramped up centre, with an elliptical arch below and a stone pineapple-shaped finial on the eastern end of the parapet. The north-east end has a yellow brick gable but a recessed later C20 brick wall in stretcher bond brickwork with a half-glazed door and attached side windows. The interior has a painted brick barrel-vaulted roof with a flight of steps leading from street level at the south-west end and a concrete floor.
The large bricks in English bond appear to be no earlier than mid C19. There is no indication of any earlierfabric although it is possible that the building could have been built over an earlier structure."
It is "impressive in its scale and of a curious and unusual form" - Palazzo style - and "of local interest within a designated conservation area" (1).
