Monument record TR 36 SW 424 - Medieval features, south of Cottington Road, Cliffsend

Medieval ditches and hollows found in Trenches 1-3 in Area A, during archaeological evaluation of land south of Cottington Road, Cliffsend (features 105, 211 and 308).

In trench 1: an east-west aligned, linear ditch 105, with very shallow (15%) concave sides and a slightly concave base measured 1.70m in width and 0.15m in depth. The alignment and location combined with the geophysical survey results suggested that this feature might represent part of a trackway leading to an enclosure to the west.

In trench 2 - feature 211 measured 0.59m wide and 0.13m, a deep gully with concave side and base contained a single fill which contained medieval pottery.

In trench 3 were two ditches: 306 – 0.50m wide and 308 – 0.80m wide on broadly northwest-southeast orientation were not investigated, although medieval pottery was recovered from the surface of 308. (1)(infomration summarised from source)
