Full Description
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Oxford Archaeology at Russell Street car park, Dover, ahead of plans to construct a multi storey car park at the site. Three trenches were excavated revealing a series of deposits dating to between the early Medieval period to modern. Trench 2 revealed a Medieval oven at its southern end. This oven was found cutting the lower levels of a series of cobbled and chalk surfaces the earliest of which was laid in the 12th century. These surfaces, the latest of which dates to the 16th century, also seal this oven and so a possible date of between the 13th and 15th centuries may be suggested for it. (1)
