Full Description
During archaeological observations of bulk excavations at the site of the Elizabeth Street Pumping Station, Dover, a series of deposits were recorded in the north west corner of the site. These consisted of 1.98m of made ground which was characterised by a dark grey, fine sandy matrix and which contained reasonable quantities of post medieval pottery and ceramic building material. Mollusc shells and animal bones were also present in this made ground, especially in the lowest 200mm. This made ground overlay natural gravels and basal chalk. (1) The make-up layer here observed is likely to represent the infilling of the Paradise Pent which was located here during the earlier post medieval period. (1)
