Monument record TR 34 SW 1523 - Later post medieval building (building 52) off Townwall Street, Dover (Period 4)

Summary

During excavations undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, ahead of the rebuilding of the Townwall Street filling Station, Dover, a complex series of stratified archaeological deposits were revealed representing activity at the site between the early Medieval period and later post medieval periods. Period 4 consists of some somewhat fragmentary post medieval remains which largely consisted of wall footings relating to buildings and garden boundaries. Post war clearance of the site appears to have truncated most of the associated stratified remains. Building 52 was situated to the north of Clarence Street and consisted of a shallow half cellar measuring 4.82-5.2m (NNE-SSW) by 2.84-2.96m (NNW-SSE). Full Description

Building 52 was situated to the north of Clarence Street and consisted of a shallow half cellar measuring 4.82-5.2m (NNE-SSW) by 2.84-2.96m (NNW-SSE) and was 0.22m deep. It lies adjacent to the period 3 chalk block boundary wall which fronts onto Clarence Street and was dug into the early soils which accumulated over the site after the abandonment of the period 1 buildings. The north west corner was cut by a post medieval, rectangular brick and stone lined tank. The walls are of red brick, flint and greensand set in a cream sandy mortar, but they have been heavily robbed. There is a trodden floor of purple ash. (1)
