During excavations undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, ahead of the rebuilding of the Townwall Street filling Station, Dover, a complex series of stratified archaeological deposits were revealed representing activity at the site between the early Medieval period and later post medieval periods. Period 4 consists of some somewhat fragmentary post medieval remains which largely consisted of wall footings relating to buildings and garden boundaries. Post war clearence of the site appears to have truncated most of the associated stratification. The most substantial walls were those of the Burlington Hotel, revealed at the north-eastern edge of the excavated area. A few traces of the preceeding Clarence House were also identified. A small 19th century cellared building (building 52)was investigated on the northern side of Clarence Street but other recent structures in this area were not examined. Several of the walls and buildings located can be identified on 19th century mapping. (1)
