Monument record TR 34 SW 1524 - Site of the post medieval Clarence Place Cottages off Townwall Street Dover (Period 4)

Summary

During excavations undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust, ahead of the rebuilding of the Townwall Street filling Station, Dover, a complex series of stratified archaeological deposits were revealed representing activity at the site between the early Medieval period and later post medieval periods. Period 4 consists of some somewhat fragmentary post medieval remains which largely consisted of wall footings relating to buildings and garden boundaries. Post war clearance of the site appears to have truncated most of the associated stratified remains. Excavations at the south of the site revealed the brick walls and in-filled cellars of the three northern most buildings (there were 8 in total) of Clarence Place, which are present on the 19th century OS maps. Full Description

The associated gardens to the rear of the houses were delimited by contemporary flint boundary walls. The houses and their gardens had been built entirely across 17th - 18th century dump deposits the infilled the East Brook Water. The north-eastern wall of the northern most house abutted an early stone boundary wall, which was probably laid out in the later 17th century. No attempt was made to excavate these structures as they lay mostly outside of the development area. (1)
