Full Description

(summarised from publication)

Five Medieval pits, cutting an earlier Anglo Saxon hut (N2), were located during excavations just to the north of Market Street, Dover. These pits also cut through the earlier Medieval metalling which sealed the Anglo Saxon deposits beneath.

Pit one was a large pit at the western end of the Saxon Hut and was cut by pit 2 which was much smaller. Pit three was another large pit and cut the north east corner of the underlying Saxon hut. Pits four and five cut the south eastern corner of the hut, four being the earlier and smaller of the two. Most of these pits contained residual sherds of Roman pottery and all of them contained Medieval sherds dating to between the 9th and 14th centuries, the earliest of which are probably residual. Overall these pits may be broadly dated to the 12th to 14th centuries. (1)
