Full Description
(Summarised from publications)
During extensive rescue excavations undertaken across Dover’s Town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, sections of the defensive ditch and associated berm were located on all four side of the Fort. A small section of the western berm was located during excavations at the Battle of Britain Homes site in 1971. This had been covered with a thick layer of pebble metalling. The lip of an inclined feature was located to the west of the berm, the majority of this feature lay outside the limits of excavation but it is assumed that it represents the defensive ditch.
The berm abutted the external face of the forts wall and was 1.2m wide. The possible ditch was wider than 2.6m and deeper than 60cm. (1)
