Full Description

(Summarised from publication)

During a series of extensive rescue excavations, ahead of development in Dover’s town centre, undertaken by Kent Archaeological Rescue unit a series of features relating to the late Roman Saxon Shore Fort were excavated and recorded. During these excavations a total of seven of the Shore Forts external bastions were located and excavated. This includes the heavily damaged remains of the south-western corner bastion which was uncovered during the excavation of a small car park on the north side of Queens Street (Car Park Site).

This bastion had unfortunately been heavily robbed and truncated by later features at this site but from what survived it is clear that it was one of the integral build bastions (some were later additions). It was constructed of chalk rubble blocks set in a hard white mortar. It is likely that it would have had a circular plan with a suggested diameter of about 6.5m, a small section of the external face was revealed and this showed a fain curving face. Both the south and west walls of the fort joined this bastion at an angle of 100 degrees. (1)
