Full Description
(summarised from source) Two 11th-12th century pits were located during an excavation at the former site of the Post Office at Biggin Street, Dover. The first was located in trench 9 and was a small pit, 0.23m deep, cutting both the natural and an earlier Roman pit at 5.067m OD. It was located in the NW corner of the trench with a visible radius of 0.5m and contained a silt clay fill which was devoid of any finds. The second was located in trench 11 and was a probable rubbish pit, 0.4m deep with an approximate radius of 1m. it was filled with a dark brown silt clay which contained four sherds of 11th-12th century pottery as well as animal bone and intrusive flints. The feature cut through a possible Saxon cultivation soil. (1)
